    SEER2 Explained: What Efficiency Rating Should a Long Island Home Buy?

    SEER2 is the seasonal energy efficiency ratio of an air conditioner measured under the testing rules that took effect in 2023. It tells you how much cooling a system produces per unit of electricity across a whole season. Higher is more efficient. On Long Island, most homeowners get the best return between 15.2 and 17 SEER2 — above that, you're buying comfort and humidity control more than utility savings.

    What changed when SEER became SEER2

    The old SEER test measured equipment against duct static pressure that almost no real house has. SEER2 raised the test pressure so results reflect actual installed conditions. Nothing about the equipment got worse — the yardstick got honest. As a rough conversion, a SEER2 number is about 4.5% lower than the old SEER number on the same system. A 16 SEER unit tests at roughly 15.2 SEER2.

    That matters when you're comparing quotes. If one contractor lists SEER and another lists SEER2, you're not looking at the same scale. Ask every bidder for SEER2 and the AHRI certificate number for the specific outdoor unit, indoor coil, and air handler combination they're proposing — efficiency is a property of the matched system, not the condenser alone.

    The 2026 minimums for our region

    The Department of Energy splits the country into regions. New York falls in the North, where split-system central air conditioners must hit at least 14.3 SEER2. Systems below that can no longer be manufactured for installation here. You'll also see two other ratings on the sticker:

    • EER2 — efficiency at a single hot design condition (95°F). Useful for judging performance during an actual Long Island heat wave.
    • HSPF2 — heating efficiency, relevant only for heat pumps. Look for 7.5 or higher for our climate, and check the rated capacity at 5°F rather than the headline number.
    • SEER2 — the seasonal average, and the number most quotes lead with.

    What each tier costs on Long Island in 2026

    These are installed price bands for a typical 3-ton replacement on serviceable ductwork — the most common job we do across Levittown, East Meadow, Bethpage, and the surrounding towns:

    • 14.3–15.2 SEER2, single-stage: $8,500–$10,500 installed
    • 15.2–17 SEER2, two-stage: $10,000–$13,500 installed
    • 18–20 SEER2, variable-speed inverter: $12,500–$16,000 installed
    • 20–22 SEER2, premium variable-speed with communicating controls: $15,000–$18,500 installed

    Moving from the legal minimum to the 15.2–17 tier typically costs $1,500–$3,000 more and cuts cooling electricity use by roughly 10–18%. On a Long Island home spending $600–$900 on summer cooling, that's $70–$160 a year — a payback measured in years, not decades, and the equipment usually lasts 15.

    Where the payback stops

    Jumping from 17 to 22 SEER2 costs another $3,000–$5,000 and saves maybe another $50–$90 a year in electricity. On pure utility math, that doesn't return. What it does buy is real, though, and worth being honest about:

    • Humidity control. Variable-speed systems run long cycles at 30–40% capacity, which removes far more moisture from the air. In a humid August on the South Shore this is the single biggest comfort difference between tiers.
    • Temperature evenness. Long low-capacity cycles keep upstairs and downstairs closer together than a single-stage unit slamming on and off.
    • Noise. Inverter compressors at part load are dramatically quieter — a real factor on Long Island lots where the condenser sits eight feet from a bedroom window.
    • Resale documentation. High-efficiency equipment with registered warranty and permits shows well on an appraisal.

    Efficiency you already paid for and aren't getting

    A 20 SEER2 system on undersized ductwork performs like a 15. This is the part of the quote most homeowners never see priced, and it decides whether the rating on the sticker means anything:

    1. Manual-J load calculation. Correct tonnage is worth more than two efficiency tiers. An oversized system short-cycles, never dehumidifies, and wears out early.
    2. Static pressure test on existing ducts. If the ductwork can't move the air, high-efficiency equipment can't do its job.
    3. Duct sealing. Leaky returns in an unconditioned attic can waste 15–25% of capacity before it reaches a room.
    4. Line-set and charge accuracy. A system charged by guesswork instead of by weight and superheat loses efficiency on day one.
    5. Matched AHRI-certified components. Mixing a new condenser with an old coil voids the rating and often the warranty.

    Which tier we recommend, by house

    • Unexpanded Levitt cape or small ranch, moderate AC use: 15.2 SEER2 two-stage. Best cost-per-comfort.
    • Expanded ranch or dormered cape with a hot upstairs: 17–18 SEER2 two-stage or variable-speed, paired with duct correction.
    • South Shore home near the water: 15.2–17 SEER2 with coated coils. Corrosion protection matters more here than the last efficiency point.
    • Home you plan to stay in 10+ years and run hard all summer: 18–20 SEER2 variable-speed. The humidity control alone changes how the house feels.
    • Adding cooling where there's no ductwork: ductless mini-splits, which start around 19 SEER2 and go past 30 — the highest-efficiency option available for a retrofit.

    The bottom line

    Don't buy the biggest number on the brochure. Buy the right tonnage from a Manual-J calculation, get the ductwork tested and sealed, then spend the remaining budget on efficiency — usually landing at 15.2–17 SEER2 for most Long Island homes, and higher when humidity control is the goal.
