Repair or replace? Score your HVAC system

Answer seven questions about your system and the repair you've been quoted. You'll get a straight recommendation and the 2026 Long Island numbers behind it.

    Verdict

    Repair, but plan ahead

This repair is defensible, but the system is entering the window where the next failure decides it. Get the repair number and a replacement quote in writing so the choice isn't made for you in a heat wave.

    Repair vs. replacement

    $1,200 = 13% of a typical replacement

    2026 replacement bands

Standard efficiency $6,800–$12,500 · variable-speed high efficiency $11,500–$18,500, installed on serviceable ductwork.

This is a decision aid, not a quote. Real recommendations depend on what a technician measures — compressor amp draw, refrigerant charge, duct static pressure, and heat exchanger condition. Our diagnostic is a flat $99, waived when you approve the repair, and on any system past 15 years we show you the repair and replacement numbers side by side.

    How the repair-or-replace math works

The honest version of this decision isn't a single rule — it's four numbers. What the repair costs, how many years the system realistically has left, what replacement costs today, and what you'd save each month running newer equipment. When a repair costs a third of replacement on a system with three years left, you're renting time at a very high rate.

Two Long Island specifics push the math harder than most calculators account for. First, R-22 systems: the refrigerant is no longer produced, so a leak repair on older equipment gets more expensive every season. Second, salt air. South of Merrick Road, coils corrode years earlier, so a coil leak on a twelve-year-old coastal system rarely means only one more repair.

What we check before recommending either one

    1. 1.Compressor amp draw and winding resistance — a compressor drawing high amps is already on its way out even if it still starts.
    2. 2.Refrigerant charge, superheat and subcool, plus a pressure test when a leak is suspected, so a "top-off" never gets sold as a repair.
    3. 3.Duct static pressure — if distribution is the real problem, neither a repair nor a bigger system fixes the comfort complaint.
    4. 4.Heat exchanger and electrical condition on the heating side, since a combined changeout is usually cheaper than two separate projects.

Repair or replace: questions we get every summer

When is it worth repairing an AC instead of replacing it?

Repair usually wins when the system is under about 12 years old, still uses R-410A, has no history of repeat failures, and the repair costs less than roughly a third of replacement. A $300 capacitor on a 9-year-old system is an easy repair decision.

What is the 50% rule for HVAC replacement?

The common rule of thumb says replace when the repair costs more than half the value of the system. In practice we use a tighter test on Long Island: if the repair exceeds about a third of replacement cost on a system past 15 years, replacement almost always costs less over five years.

Does R-22 refrigerant mean I have to replace my AC?

Not automatically, but it changes the math. R-22 is no longer produced, so recharging a leaking R-22 system is expensive and gets worse each season. If an R-22 system needs a coil or a compressor, replacement is nearly always the better spend.

How long does an air conditioner last on Long Island?

Inland, 15–20 years with annual maintenance. Within a few blocks of the South Shore bays and canals, salt corrosion commonly shortens that to 10–14 years unless the equipment was installed with coated coils and stainless hardware.

Is it cheaper to replace the AC and furnace at the same time?

Usually yes when both are near end of life. One visit, one set of permits, shared labor on the indoor coil and plenum, and a properly matched system. Replacing them years apart often means paying twice for the same indoor work.

How much does a compressor replacement cost versus a new system?

A compressor replacement on Long Island typically runs $1,800–$3,200 installed. A full standard-efficiency system replacement runs $6,800–$12,500. On a 15-year-old unit, spending $2,500 on a compressor buys a few years at best.

Will you tell me honestly if I should just repair it?

Yes — and we quote both. The diagnostic is a flat $99 waived when you approve a repair, and on any system past 15 years we show the repair number and the replacement number side by side so you can decide.
